WorkReady 2016 - Intersectionality

Speaking Out From The Intersections

LGBTQ+ Youth and Youth Allies Use Theatre and Radio Podcasting To Express And Promote Awareness Across Communities On Intersectionality

“Intersectionality” is the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.

This Summer 45 youth spent six weeks working on a youth-centered media and theater service learning project here at The Attic focusing on the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth of color and how their identities are linked to obstacles and barriers they face in their homes, schools, and communities. Youth were divided into two cohorts (media arts or theater arts) to explore new ways to empower themselves and to educate peers and community about the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality.
