“Here [at the Attic Youth Center], we are learning to develop our voice. I appreciate that it is letting me acquire these skills.” -J., Youth Radio Intern at the Attic Youth Center

The Attic Youth Center is Philadelphia’s sole organization dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth. Initially part of the Voyage House, the Attic Youth Center has been serving the Philadelphia LGBTQ Youth Community for the past 23 years.

Youth are able to become a part of a caring community where they are able to receive professional development and personal enrichment through internship experiences and group activities.

Opportunities abound for young people at the Attic Youth Center. Notable offerings include:

-Identity Support Groups-serve to build the community and forge bonds among youth; youth are able to be supported by professional staff as well as support each other

-Youth Panelist Experience in partnership with The Bryson Institute:  Youth Panelists teach students, teachers, and school administration about the best practices on serving LGBTQ youth

-Opportunities to participate in job-readiness programming through The Attic’s high school internship program: WHYY Tour, Visit to the Philadelphia Tribune, and also a private youth conference with Nellie Fitzpatrick, the Director of the Mayor’s Office for LGBT Affairs for the City of Philadelphia (discussion about gender issues in schools and the City, and how the Attic Youth Center participants can use their voice and their platform to help out)

-The Attic’s Life Skills Center includes groups like drama, poetry, dance, cooking, and more, as well as offers one-on-one life coaching to help young people apply to college or scholarships, or bring up their grades. The Attic also coordinates trips to regional colleges and universities for youth to go on college tours.
