Shawnese Givens, LMFT - Interim Executive Director

Shawnese Givens, LMFT, Interim Executive Director- Shawnese is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist with over a decade of experience working with LGBTQ community. She served on the Board of Directors of the Attic Youth Center for 4 years and first became the Acting Executive Director in April 2019 and the Interim Executive Director in July 2020. Shawnese earned a Master of Arts degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from Syracuse University and received post-graduate training at the Psychotherapy Center for Gender & Sexuality of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. Shawnese’s training as a systemic clinician enables her to work with complex systems as a change agent. She is passionate about working to restore wholeness among oppressed communities, chiefly LGBTQ, POC, and youth communities. She has worked with youth and their families in various settings including as a family therapist in the PINS system in New York City, as a Substance Abuse Counselor, and clinician in private practice. Shawnese has also held various leadership positions where her work has focused on staff development and management, and developing policy and quality improvement tools to ensure quality service. She also maintains a private psychotherapy practice where she specializes in working with LGBTQ people and people of color.
